This week we investigate a maternity hospital that has been abandoned for decades. Many people have reported paranormal activity here; some even say they can't make it past the local church before the feeling to turn around becomes too strong that they have to leave. Amman Valley Hospital began in the 1920s when a private house called “Frondeg” was donated by the Folland family to serve the healthcare needs of local mining communities, eventually opening in 1936 as a small cottage hospital. It became part of the National Health Service in 1948 and gained national recognition when one of the first NHS babies, Aneira Thomas, was born there on 5 July that year. The hospital expanded with a maternity unit in 1950, but shifting healthcare demands led to its closure in 1984; despite this, the hospital continued operating and introduced new services such as a day care unit in 1995 and an ophthalmology theatre in 2001. Today, it functions as a small community hospital under Hywel Dda University Health Board, maintaining its role as an important local healthcare provider rooted in the social history of the Amman Valley.
