The date Plato gives for Atlantis lines up with something real: a catastrophic rise in sea level at the end of the last ice age. The problem is that most scholars who study Plato don't study oceanography or marine geology, so they miss the connection entirely. They read the text in isolation from the physical evidence. But when you look at what was happening on Earth around 11,600 years ago, the timeline isn't arbitrary. Sea levels were rising rapidly as the ice sheets collapsed. Coastlines were being redrawn. Entire landscapes were submerged. The date handed down from the Egyptian priests to Solon, then to Dropides, and eventually to Critias, wasn't pulled from mythology. It corresponds to a real geological event. If you want to understand what Plato was describing, you have to understand what the planet was doing at that moment in time.
