The geologic record doesn't change smoothly. It changes in bursts. Long stretches of relative stability, then something breaks the pattern. A narrow window opens, extreme events cascade, and suddenly more erosion, more sedimentation, more landscape transformation happens in that brief interval than occurred over the previous tens or even hundreds of thousands of years. This is punctuated equilibrium applied to Earth systems. The evidence is in the stratigraphy, in the flood deposits, in the scoured bedrock. Most of deep time is quiet. The drama is compressed into catastrophic episodes. Understanding this changes how we read the rock record and how we think about the forces that shaped the world we inherited.
