Most people assume an event like that is rare, maybe once every few thousand years. The data tells a different story. Tambora ranks as only the 26th most severe volcanic eruption in the Holocene, the last 11,600 years. That means 25 larger eruptions occurred in roughly the same timeframe, each one capable of equal or greater climate impact. When you start mapping those events, the frequency becomes impossible to ignore.
