Finger Lakes Grottoes: Evidence of Ice Age Megafloods

The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York holds evidence of one of the most dramatic meltwater events at the end of the last ice age. As the Laurentide ice sheet collapsed, enormous volumes of glacial meltwater surged off the ice from the north, sweeping up and around the northern flanks of the Adirondack Mountains. The majority of that water then flowed back southward, draining out through Lake Ontario and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. But in the process, it carved out a series of grottoes: sheltered, sculpted landscapes that feel almost enchanted when you stand inside them. These are not just scenic overlooks. They are physical records of catastrophic discharge, preserved in stone and topography. Walking through these grottoes, you are surrounded by the signature of flood dynamics operating at a scale most people never consider. The landscape itself becomes the evidence. Join the Finger Lakes Tour, August 30th to September 5th, and walk these sites firsthand. See the grottoes, trace the meltwater pathways, and understand the mechanics of glacial outburst flooding in one of North America's most underappreciated flood landscapes.
