James Webb Captured a Supernova Like We’ve Never Seen Before ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/r5jd1F While in low Earth orbit, the SVOM spacecraft, designed to observe the most powerful explosions in the Universe, detects an unexpected 10-second signal. It came to us from the farthest reaches of the Universe and traveled for more than 13 billion years! NASA scientists pointed the James Webb Space Telescope at this region of space, and it captured something astonishing. The intense burst of light turned out to be the massive release of electromagnetic radiation from the supernova explosion of a giant star. It is the most ancient stellar death ever discovered [GRB 250314A]. It exploded when the Universe was just 730-million-years old—just 5% of its current age! In such a young cosmos, stars had a somewhat different chemical composition, meaning they should have exploded in a fundamentally different way than they do today. But as it turns out, this ancient supernova looks suspiciously similar to modern ones. And this is not the only weird thing detected. Recently, several other explosions have been detected, and all of them have proven to be extremely strange. Today, we understand why a star explodes, but they do not fully understand why these explosions turn out to be so drastically different and unusual. They explode asymmetrically, violate their own timings, and some of them turn out to be so bizarre that they simply refuse to die.
