Missoula Floods: 10x Every River on Earth Combined

The Missoula Floods moved water at a scale almost impossible to comprehend. One measured event reached 800 million cubic feet per second. To put that in perspective, if you combined every river on Earth, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Nile, the Congo, the Yangtze, every creek and stream currently flowing, the total discharge wouldn't reach even one tenth of what moved across the Pacific Northwest at the end of the last ice age. These weren't gradual events. They were cataclysmic releases of impounded glacial lakes, carving the Channeled Scablands in a matter of days. The evidence is still there: giant current ripples, dry cataracts hundreds of feet high, erratic boulders scattered across the landscape. Understanding floods of this magnitude changes how we interpret not just geology, but the entire timeline of human development during the Holocene.
